Identify the correct replacement before it is due

  • Record the UV equipment model and serial number.
  • Find the specified lamp part number and approved substitutions, if any.
  • Check connector, electrical and controller compatibility—not just length.
  • Confirm whether seals, sleeves or other parts are required during service.
  • Keep purchase and installation dates with the manual.

Do not substitute a decorative black light or another lamp that merely fits the socket. The complete system is designed around particular operating characteristics. If the original part is unavailable, obtain manufacturer-supported guidance before using a substitute.

Use the documented service interval

There is no single lifespan that applies to all UV lamps. The replacement interval may be stated in operating hours, calendar time or a product-specific maintenance plan. Use the actual manual and operating conditions.

A lamp-on indicator can report electrical operation without measuring useful dose at the treatment target. Where a system includes a sensor or alarm, understand what that device measures and how the manufacturer says to respond. Do not replace that process with a visual inspection of an energized lamp.

Service safely and restore operation correctly

Isolate the equipment as instructed before service and allow the lamp to cool where required. Do not look directly at an energized germicidal lamp. Use the specified handling procedure to avoid damage or contamination of components.

For a water reactor, follow the manual’s isolation, pressure, sealing and restart procedures. A generic maintenance article cannot provide safe instructions for every chamber. Arrange qualified service when the work exceeds the owner maintenance described by the manufacturer.

Keep a simple maintenance log

Record the date, task, lamp part number, service provider and next due date. Note any fault and the action taken rather than only recording that it was reset. Keep invoices and manuals accessible to the next person servicing the system.

After replacement, complete the manufacturer’s restart and verification steps. For water treatment, an interruption may require additional action for downstream plumbing or the drinking-water supply. A new lamp alone does not prove that all system conditions are correct.

Questions People Ask Next

How often should a UV bulb be replaced?

Use the exact product’s specified interval. Lamp technologies, controllers and operating conditions vary, so a universal annual rule is not appropriate for every system. Record the next due date when the lamp is installed and confirm the correct replacement part before it is needed. Cleaning and other service tasks may follow a different schedule.

Can I keep using a lamp that still glows?

Visible glow does not establish that the lamp remains within its useful germicidal specification. Follow the replacement schedule and the manufacturer’s interpretation of sensors or alarms. Do not delay required service because the light looks unchanged, and never expose your eyes to an energized lamp to judge brightness.

Is a generic replacement lamp acceptable?

Only use a replacement that is supported for the exact system. Physical dimensions and connector fit do not establish electrical compatibility or treatment performance. Ask the manufacturer about substitutions, especially if the original part is discontinued. Keep the approved part information with the equipment so future service does not rely on guesswork.

Should I clean or replace the quartz sleeve?

Follow the reactor manual and assess the sleeve’s condition using the specified procedure. Deposits, damage and sealing requirements need different responses. Use only approved cleaning materials and replacement parts. If the task requires opening pressurized equipment or procedures beyond the owner instructions, arrange qualified service rather than improvising.

Does resetting an alarm fix the problem?

No. A reset only changes the alarm state unless the underlying issue has been addressed. Determine what the indication means for that model and complete the prescribed response. For drinking-water treatment, follow the documented alternative-water and restart plan while adequacy of treatment is uncertain. Record both the fault and corrective action.
